Throughout
my career I have seen many nationally important collections
and precious individual objects irreversibly damaged through
poor conservation and restoration practices.
Many
people are unaware that there is no qualification for furniture
conservators/restorers in Australia. Furniture conservators/restorers
have little choice but to travel abroad to attend an institution
at great expense, or to self-educate.
The Winston Churchill Fellowship granted me
the opportunity to work with, study and observe conservation
work throughout many of the worlds leading museums, private
workshops and educational institutions. This privileged
experience has been invaluable in the development of my knowledge
and skill base that is ever expanding.
Today I play an active role in preserving Australian
furniture heritage. Educating the public of our unique collections
and training restorers and conservators who will maintain
these, are crucial to ensuring our furniture survives into
the future for coming generations to learn from and enjoy
just as we have.
