Early nineteenth century Anglo Indian sewing
box. Horn veneer on sandalwood, ebony.
The substrate timber had moved considerably,
causing the horn to lift in many places. The front veneer had broken,
and many pieces were adrift. Thanks to the contentious owners, many
of these pieces were with the box. The horn on the entire lid was
loose and had to be lifted and relayed. A thick coat of coloured
varnish had also been applied which warranted careful removal. Several
other unsympathetic repairs were undone. Missing sections were cast
from existing parts, then coloured and polished to match.
