Tall Mahogany Chest of DrawersTall Mahogany Chest of Drawers, with seven drawers and blind fretwork frieze, circa 1770. This solid mahogany chest of drawers, with oak as its secondary timber, was in poor condition. Structurally the drawers did not operate due to warping and wear. The chest was lacking feet and large sections of the blind fretwork were missing. Treatment to the chest of drawers included the construction of new feet, the design of which was based on physical evidence found on the underside of the chest. The drawers were repaired, runners rebuilt, and new fretwork was scarfed into the areas of loss. All new work was coloured and polished to match the original finish that was preserved with careful cleaning and waxing. |
