Welsh Grandfather ClockWelsh Grandfather Clock with Movement by Randle Maddock, Leek, Staffordshire, circa 1690. This long case clock has been heavily researched with several trips to the point of the movement’s origin, Leek, England. The clock’s movement underwent conservation with horologist Roger Little, Canberra. The clock was located in Junee, NSW up until 1946, but how it came to be in Australia is still at this time unknown. The oak case is heavily carved. The caddy and plinth have been added at different times, with the plinth replacing one that was removed probably due to rot. Small losses of moulding had occurred and were carefully patched. The finish, which had been over-coated, was carefully cleaned of dirt and grime before re-waxing. Forensic examination revealed a series of dates when the clock had been serviced, these were found after examining the case under infrared light, and these pencil inscriptions helped to accurately date the clock. |
